Australia’s currently experiencing a severe heatwave, with temperatures soaring up to 48.9°C in Victoria’s northwest Mallee region, shattering the previous state record set in 2009. This extreme weather event has led to widespread disruptions, including
– *Bushfires and Evacuations*: Six major fires are burning out of control in Victoria, with authorities urging residents to evacuate and declaring total fire bans across the state.
– *Australian Open Disruptions*: The heatwave has forced the postponement of wheelchair matches and outdoor court games, with players using ice packs and portable fans to cope with the scorching temperatures.
– *Health Concerns*: The heatwave has raised concerns about heat-related illnesses, with emergency services warning vulnerable individuals to take precautions.
– *Record-Breaking Temperatures*: Other states, including New South Wales and South Australia, have also recorded record-breaking temperatures, with some areas approaching 50°C.

Climate change has made this heatwave five times more likely, according to a new analysis by World Weather Attribution. The study found that similar three-day heat events are now expected about once every five years, instead of once every 25 years.
