Due to last week’s snowfall in the Wilmington area, a number of events were understandably postponed or canceled.
One of them was Fourth Friday Gallery Night, the monthly crawl of downtown-area Wilmington art galleries. The good news is, there’s actually a fifth Friday in January this month, so this month’s Fourth Friday will happen this week from 6-9 p.m.
Highlights include a show at Acme Art on North Fifth Avenue featuring work by the artists of this year’s No Boundaries International Art Colony on Bald Head Island; a Parisian “salon”-style show at New Element Gallery on North Front Street; and “A Life In Color” at public radio WHQR’s MC Erny Gallery, which celebrates the work of late North Carolina artist Frances H. LaFontaine.

After last week’s snow and deep freeze, this weekend’s going to feel downright balmy. Highs in the 60s on Friday and Saturday but just reaching the upper 50s on Sunday, with lows getting down into the 40s. A few clouds.
It’ll be a good weekend to get out and do a few things as we kick January to the curb and slide into February.
The University of North Carolina Wilmington’s music department will have three days of events for the UNCW New Music Festival, with original, experimental and classically inspired music we don’t often get around here, like Sputter Box Trio (video above), which plays Thursday, Jan. 30, at Beckwith Recital Hall on campus.
On Friday, guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and bassist Jack Casady of Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Jefferson Airplane bring their long-running blues act Hot Tuna to UNCW’s Kenan Auditorium.
On Saturday, the Brooklyn Arts District will hold its first event as Wilmington’s first free-drinking social district with the multi-venue B.A.D. Coffee Crawl.
Food writer Allison Ballard has a list of February food and drink events, and don’t forget to cast your vote for which Wilmington restaurant has the best wings.
