External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar will represent the Government of India at the swearing-in ceremony of the U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on January 20. President-elect Trump has invited several heads of governments and heads of states to be present at the event and the subsequent celebrations that are to be held in Washington DC.
“On the invitation of the Trump-Vance Inaugural Committee, External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr. S. Jaishankar will represent the Government of India at the Swearing-in Ceremony of President Elect Donald J. Trump as the 47th President of the United States of America,” announced the Ministry of External Affairs on Sunday (January 12, 2025). Mr Jaishankar visited the U.S. last month (December 24-29) when he met with officials from the Biden administration and also met with Congressman Michael Waltz who has been chosen by President Trump to be his next National Security Adviser (NSA).
On the invitation of the Trump-Vance Inaugural Committee, External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar will represent the Government of India at the Swearing-in Ceremony of the President-Elect Donald J. Trump as the 47th President of the United States of America.

Earlier last Monday, outgoing NSA Jake Sullivan visited India and announced that the U.S. will remove restrictions over nuclear and scientific entities of India. President Trump had visited India in February 2020 during his first tenure. During that 36-hour visit, President Trump toured Gujarat, Agra and New Delhi where he was hosted at the Hyderabad House.
The second Trump Presidency has however drawn attention because Mr Trump’s core supporters in the MAGA (Make America Great Again) Republican campaign have expressed vehement opposition to the H1B visa process. While Mr Trump and his leading team member Elon Musk have generally supported the H1B visa system, the MAGA movement has been unrelenting on criticising the visa system that India supports, giving the impression that the Trump presidency ultimately may take a relook at the visa process.
India has so far maintained a studied silence on the internal debates in the U.S. that are relevant to its economy but the Official Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs on January 3 said the visa system is beneficial to both sides and described the India-U.S. partnership as an “expansive world” adding, “…within this ambit, mobility of skilled professionals is an important component in this ambit and in this collaboration. India-U.S. economic ties benefit a lot from the technical expertise provided by skilled professionals, with both sides leveraging their strengths and competitive value. We look forward to further deepening India-U.S. economic ties which are to our mutual benefit.”
Apart from being present at the swearing-in ceremony, during his visit to the U.S., External Affairs Minister Jaishankar will hold several meetings with officials of the incoming administration where India’s concerns are expected to feature. The interactions will be an opportunity to explore possibility of hosting President Trump in India during the upcoming Quad leaders summit. India is in charge of hosting the fifth Quad leaders summit this year and the last summit was held on September 21 by President Joe Biden in Delaware.
The announcement from the MEA on Sunday stated, “During the visit, EAM will also have meetings with representatives of the incoming Administration, as also some other dignitaries visiting the U.S. on that occasion.”
