Donald Trump declared the “golden age of America begins right now” as he vowed to send American troops to the southern border to “repel the disastrous invasion” of the US.
Delivering his inauguration speech, Mr Trump said the US “will flourish and be respected again all over the world”, adding: “We will be the envy of every nation, and we will not allow ourselves to be taken advantage of any longer.”
Mr Trump, 78, pledged he would soon declare a national emergency at the southern border and would “halt” all illegal entry to the country.
“We will begin the process of returning millions and millions of criminal aliens back to the places from which they came”, he said, adding: “I will send troops to the southern border to repel the disastrous invasion of our country.”
Mr Trump also used the moment to take a swipe at his political rivals, attacking the “vicious, violent and unfair weaponisation of the Justice Department”.
Mr Trump also vowed to make Martin Luther King’s “dream come true” after thanking his black and Hispanic supporters.
The president-elect stood next to his wife Melania Trump as he took the oath of office shortly after midday in Washington.
