This past year had Us questioning whether love is even real after a months-long onslaught of celebrity breakups.
One of the first shocking splits that took the world by storm in 2023 was Tom Sandoval and Ariana Madix. Us Weekly confirmed in March that the Vanderpump Rules stars broke up after nearly a decade of dating once Madix learned that Sandoval was having an affair with costar Raquel Leviss. News of the affair soon took over the internet, and thus Scandoval was born.
“This situation made me realize that I can do hard things,” Madix exclusively told Us Weekly in October after being named Us’ first Reality Star of the Year. “The worst-case scenario literally did happen, and I was OK. Like, look — you can handle what’s thrown at you.”
Later in the year, love died again as news broke that Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner called it quits after four years of marriage. Us confirmed in September that Jonas filed for divorce and stated his marriage was “irretrievably broken.”

No one had Spears and Asghari’s breakup on their 2023 bingo card. The personal trainer filed for divorce in August but listed the duo’s date of separation as July 28.
“After 6 years of love and commitment to each other my wife and I have decided to end our journey together,” Asghari wrote via an Instagram Story statement at the time, also noting that “s–t happens.” He added: “We will hold onto the love and respect we have for each other and I wish her the best always.”
The pop star broke her silence a few days after Asghari addressed their divorce
“6 years is a long time to be with someone so, I’m a little shocked but … I’m not here to explain why because its honestly nobody’s business !!!” Spears shared via Instagram. “But, I couldn’t take the pain anymore honestly !!! In some sort of telepathic way I have been receiving so many messages that melt my heart from friends and I thank you !!!”

Tartick and Bristowe took Bachelor Nation by surprise when they called off their engagement in August.
“After sharing the news with family and close friends first, and taking the time to properly process it ourselves, we are saddened with heavy hearts to share that we have decided to end our engagement,” the duo wrote at the time. “We are thankful for all of you who gave us the time and space to process this life altering decision as there are many emotions and changes to navigate.”
They continued: “Continuing our friendship is incredibly important to both of us. We feel grateful to be ending our engagement with love and respect for each other. It’s heartbreaking and sad to say goodbye, but our care and admiration for one another will never die.”
Since making the announcement, the pair have been candid about how tough the breakup has been for them. Tartick confessed during an emotional December interview with Chris Harrison that he’s never cried more in his entire life. Bristowe, meanwhile, revealed that she had a panic attack in September.

Vergara and Manganiello called it quits in July after seven years of marriage.
“We have made the difficult decision to divorce,” Vergara and Manganiello said in a joint statement at the time. “As two people that love and care for one another very much, we politely ask for respect of our privacy at this time as we navigate this new phase of our lives.”
While the news seemed shocking to some observers, many eagle-eyed fans weren’t taken aback. The pair had skipped several events together, including Sarah Hyland and Wells Adams’ wedding and Vergara’s annual Fourth of July bash.

“We have had a rough year. The most challenging one of our marriage,” they shared in a joint social media statement after the news broke. “But we both love and respect each other tremendously. There has been no wrongdoing on anyone’s part. Although we are in the public eye, we ask to be able to work through our issues privately.”

The Real Housewives of Atlanta alums have had one of the most chaotic breakups of 2023. The duo filed for divorce in May after more than a decade of marriage and soon became engaged in a messy legal battle over financial assets and the custody of their children. Biermann accused his estranged wife of having a gambling problem, while Zolciak-Biermann requested that the former football player undergo a drug test.
Things seemed to be turning around for them in July when Zolciak-Biermann filed paperwork to dismiss their divorce, but the reconciliation didn’t last, as Biermann filed for divorce a second time the following month.

The Pump Rules stars’ fiery breakup dominated pop culture as many fans voiced their support for Madix. After the affair was made public, Sandoval first issued a public apology to his business partners, which led his costars to call him out for not addressing his ex-girlfriend. Days later, Sandoval issued a second apology to Madix.
“I want to first and foremost apologize to everyone I’ve hurt through this process. Most of all, I want to apologize to Ariana,” he wrote in an Instagram statement in March. “I made mistakes, I was selfish and made reckless decisions that hurt somebody I love. No one deserves to feel that pain so traumatically and publicly.”

After Jonas and Turner broke their silence on their divorce in September, the dynamic between the pair grew messy as they battled over custody of their two daughters. Turner sued Jonas and accused the singer of wrongfully detaining their kids in the United States while he was on tour with the Jonas Brothers and she worked on a movie in the U.K. After a month of going back and forth, the exes settled on a temporary custody agreement in October.
