The National Guard will support the 60th presidential inauguration on Jan. 20 with about 7,800 Soldiers and Airmen, according to Maj. Gen. John Andonie, the commanding general of the District of Columbia National Guard.
These Guardsmen will provide outer and inner perimeter security support to the Secret Service, U.S. Capitol Police and Washington, D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department, Andonie said during a Jan. 3 press conference.
“The National Guard is proud to contribute to the safe and orderly inauguration of our 47th commander-in-chief,” Gen. Steven S. Nordhaus, the chief of the National Guard Bureau, said in a statement Monday. “We are immensely proud of the Soldiers and Airmen who will take part in it.”
Guardsmen will provide security support, crowd management, transportation and medical assistance during the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, according to Brig. Gen. Craig M. Maceri, the PI60 Joint Task Force-DC commander and the commander of the D.C. Guard’s Land Component Command.
The Guard is committed to ensuring “a safe and secure environment for all attendees,” he said in a Monday statement.
“This mission exemplifies our motto of ‘Always Ready, Always There,’ and highlights our commitment to provide trained and ready forces capable of providing critical support when called upon by civil authorities,” Maceri said.
“We are closely aligned with our partner agencies and are trained and equipped for the mission at hand, and I’m confident our planning and preparation will enable this historic and dignified event to proceed seamlessly,” he added.
Approximately 40 states and territories have Guard formations participating in the inauguration.
Last week’s press conference about the inauguration involved the Guard, the District of Columbia’s mayor’s office, the FBI, the Secret Service, the Defense Department, the U.S. Capitol Police and the MPD. The Secret Service is the agency leading the efforts in support of the inauguration.
About 500 Soldiers were on standby to support the certification of the 2024 presidential election’s Electoral College results on Monday, Andonie said.
Guardsmen will additionally serve as liaison and escort officers for state governors attending former President Jimmy Carter’s state funeral Thursday, he added.
The Guard has supported presidential inaugurations since 1789, according to NGB.
The forerunners of today’s Guard escorted Gen. George Washington from Mount Vernon, Virginia, to his inauguration ceremony in New York City that year, NGB noted.
These personnel were part of an honor detail that included U.S. Army and Revolutionary War veterans, NGB added.
DoD authorized about 25,000 Guardsmen from across the Guard’s 54 organizations for President Joe Biden’s inauguration in 2021, NGB said.
The authorization followed the Jan. 1, 2021, attack on the Capitol building while the Electoral Results of the 2020 presidential election were being certified.
About 7,500 Guardsmen from at least 44 of the Guard’s 54 organizations also supported Trump’s first presidential inauguration in 2017, NGB stated.
