Every spring, cherry blossoms enthrall with their delicate pink flowers, and social media is full of trees laden with the beautiful flowers the world over, sparking off dedicated tourist travel. But no need to wait for a full year for another spell of cherry blossoms.
In Meghalaya, cherry trees blossom in autumn, and as the state takes on all hues of pink, it is also set to celebrate the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival 2024 on November 15-16. This year, the event will offer not only the beauty of cherry blossoms, but also a line-up of international and Indian music stars.
Titled the Year of the Legends, the event will include performances from Boney M (Farewell Tour), Jasleen Royal, Lucas, Akon (The Superfan Tour), R3HAB, Kanika Kapoor. The regional talent comes from artistes from the Meghalaya Grassroots Music Project (MGMP), alongside Arpan, Rito Riba, Khasi Bloodz, Queen Sensation, and others.
Japan has also partnered with Meghalaya for the festival this year, an interest sparked by the striking resemblance of cherry blossoms in Meghalaya and Japan noted by the Japanese ambassador during his visit to the the state last year. Visitors to the festival can explore Japan’s culture and heritage through a dedicated stall at the venue.
While the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival was first launched in 2016, and is also the world’s only cherry blossom festival in autumn, the tradition of celebrating Hanami (cherry blossom) dates back over a thousand years in Japan.
The festival’s 2023 edition saw record participation, with visitors all across the country and even international travellers. And, this year, it is expected to be even grander. Besides the natural beauty and music attractions, visitors can expect a host of activities. This ranges from fashion shows, cosplay competitions to art installations, food and wine stalls, and much more. The state’s other attractions include hiking, serene lakes and hidden caves.
Vodafone Idea clarifies that it has not received any communication from the government regarding the reported proposal to waive 50% of AGR dues. Media reports suggest this could provide a financial relief of over Rs 1 lakh crore to telecom companies. The Supreme Court has consistently dismissed appeals for recomputation of AGR dues.
