The Trump administration’s latest travel ban has left hundreds of American families in limbo, unable to bring their adopted children home from countries like Haiti, Colombia, and Thailand. The ban, which affects 39 countries, doesn’t include an exemption for adoption visas, unlike previous restrictions. This means families who’ve completed the adoption process are facing indefinite delays, causing emotional distress and uncertainty.

Families are speaking out, sharing their stories on social media and urging lawmakers to intervene. The Congressional Coalition on Adoption has written to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, asking for exemptions or clearer guidance on case-by-case exceptions. Some families have waited years, completing extensive vetting and background checks, only to be told their child’s visa is on hold.

The State Department has instructed consular posts to prioritize intercountry adoptions, but the process is slow, and many families are stuck in uncertainty.
